At School

Supports:

  • A child with autism is guaranteed certain levels of assistance within schools.
  • Services are tailored to the child’s individual needs
  • They are often put in settings with other developmentally-delayed kids, whether this is is in small groups or classes.
  • They often receive more individual attention or specialized instruction.
  • sometimes, children with autism have personal assistants that go to their classes with them.
  • Depending on functionality, students are able to spend part of the day in regular classrooms.
  • The goal is the least restrictive environment, which ensures that students are not isolated, but incorporated into the regular classroom and activities as often as possible.

IEP’S:

  • Once a student is evaluated and assessed, an IEP can be created.
  • IEP’s outline the educational goals for the individual student and the differentiated instruction that the teacher will equip the student with.
  • Parents are able to be involved in the creation of the IEP.

How to find a school:

  • Find one that promises support and understands rights of both the student and the parents.
