For Parents



Autism symptoms and early signs:

  • Best if caught by the age of eighteen months
  • Difficulty communicating (both verbally and non-verbally)
  • Difficulty relating to others and the world around them
  • Difficulty thinking and behaving flexibly 
  • Frequent temper tantrums
  • Sensitivity to sights and sounds




Autism is most commonly diagnosed between 15 and 18 months, as this is when different behaviors and lack of skills real themselves.

A child with autism has a right to:

  • “Free and Appropriate Public Education” - individualized education accoridng to student’s needs.
  • Early Intervention Services -  services afforded to young children with autism. They are free and address the child’s individual needs.
  • Special Education Services - provided by local school system. This is outlined in the student’s IEP. 
  • Extended School Year Services - services provided over extended breaks from schools, for example summer break. It helps maintain level of skills and prevents regression that could occur due to the time off of school.


A parent of a child with autism has rights to:
  • input on the IEP
